HIV Environment in Switzerland
In 2015, 538 new cases of HIV were diagnosed in Switzerland, which represented an increase of 4% over the previous year.1 HIV prevalence is highest in Zurich and Geneva, the two biggest cities. Once people living with HIV (PLHIV) are identified, the Swiss healthcare system addresses their needs proficiently, allowing the second and third UNAIDS 90-90-90 goals (access to care and treatment and retention in care and adherence) to be met. However, challenges remain around identifying new people diagnosed with HIV as there is an unmet need to increase testing capacity.
There are five large Gay Pride celebrations annually in Switzerland, which provide an opportunity for free-of-charge testing. The biggest event of the year is Zurich Gay Pride, which is held every June.
