HIV Environment in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan is a province in Western Canada, with a population of over 1 million.1It is the only area without natural borders and has been inhabited for thousands of years by various Indigenous groups.1Over 15% of people in Saskatchewan identify themselves as First Nation/indigenous.2A large proportion of the rural population lacks access to primary care facilities and providers due to very large geographical distances.3

Saskatchewan has the highest incidence of HIV in Canada and was the only province in 2014 to have mother-to-child transmission.4In addition, some people living with HIV (PLHIV) are co-infected with hepatitis C.5The most common mode of HIV transmission is via intravenous drug use (IDU).6
