Timely HIV Detection in Outpatient Clinic Users in Montevideo

HIV Environment in Montevideo

Montevideo has a population of over 1.3 million people, which accounts for nearly 40% of the entire population of Uruguay.1 The municipal area is served by the healthcare service, which has 24 outpatient clinics, dealing with approximately 300,000 patient visits a year.2 Only one of the clinics has a multidisciplinary team for the treatment and care of people living with HIV (PLHIV). Although all teams can offer rapid HIV tests, this is not done systematically due to the time limit of the consultations, medical oversight, lack of knowledge among people administrating the tests and a lack of continuity in the delivery of tests. These factors contribute to HIV being under-diagnosed and consequently, an increase in the transmission of the virus.
