Dr. Mark Wainberg passed away tragically Tuesday the 11th of April. Everyone at ViiV Healthcare wants to express our sorrow and pass our regards to his family and loved ones.
Dr Mark Wainberg and GSK/ViiV Healthcare have a common history that goes back to the early days of HIV as he was the first to identify, together with a team from Biochem, 3TC as a drug effective against HIV in 1989.
Everyone involved in HIV knows of his multiple contributions to the field of drug resistance, as throughout his career Mark accumulated more than 650 publications and the most prestigious honors: he was an Officer of the Order of Canada (Canada's highest civilian honor), an Officer of the National Order of Quebec, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, the highest honor given by France, to name a few. Yet he was incredibly humble, open and easily reached.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, he loved its bilingual character and while English was his mother tongue he would rapidly change to French if he barely suspected this might be your preference. His strong handshake, big smile and happy disposition transcended every language.
We at ViiV Healthcare, mourn the loss of a great scientist, a wonderful person and a dear friend. We will miss you, Mark.
