Ivo Struik is no stranger to the pharmaceutical sector. In his more than twenty years experience, Ivo has been involved in some of the most prevalent health issues affecting the globe.
When he had the opportunity to join ViiV Healthcare earlier this year, he could not resist:
“HIV is a key global health priority, and has interesting intersections with human rights, equality, politics and economics,” said Ivo.
“It’s a privilege to focus on one of the greatest HIV portfolios in the market. ViiV Healthcare is state-of-the-art, and is contributing something very special.”
This summer, Ivo joined ViiV Healthcare as Director of Government Affairs, Access & Patient Advocacy, as maternity cover for Helen McDowell. Ivo’s work has two key focuses: one is heading up the Positive Action for Adolescents programme, which aims to address gaps in HIV prevention, testing and care for young people, as well as helping to improve service provision and treatment outcomes for adolescents through to adulthood.
The second is leading key Access and Policy projects, in which Ivo helps ensure our medicines get to developing countries at the right time, and in the right manner. ViiV Healthcare’s approach to access to medicines covers all middle-income countries, low-income countries, least developed countries and sub-Saharan countries – 138 countries in total. We do this through a variety of approaches, based on the diverse needs of people living with HIV in different parts of the world.
Ivo is regularly involved in discussions with the HIV community, including patient organisations, international organisations and governments, in order to facilitate better access to our medicines.
“We have an outstanding portfolio, and we have responsibilities because of it. ViiV Healthcare does not neglect the people who are in need of our products,” Ivo said.
Developing strong relationships and helping people work together has been a strength of Ivo’s since the start of his career. Ivo is a recipient of the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize, for his service in the United Nations Peace Keeping (UNIFIL) after the Lebanese Civil War in 1980. Throughout this career, Ivo has drawn from his peacekeeping mission experience:
“Daily in my work at ViiV Healthcare I recognise the value of a mutual agenda – reflecting our objectives and values with those of the NGOs and governments we work with,” he said.
ViiV Healthcare’s passion and 100% focus on improving the lives of people affected by HIV underscores everything we do. These values resonate in our company culture, which was a key motivator for Ivo to join our ranks.
“There is genuine excitement and a ‘start-up’ attitude from every person who works here. It’s something have I felt from the very first day,” he explained.
“Everyone here has their roots in the ground, and is committed to getting things done.”
Ivo credits ViiV Healthcare’s strong portfolio and commitment to building relationships across the HIV community – as what brought him here, and motivates him to stay.
“It comes down to being part of a team that truly believes in what we are doing – that’s what makes it so unique to work here.”
